    How to Subscribe

To subscribe to the Materials-l List send the text

    SUBSCRIBE Materials-l Your Name
    END

to the address listproc@liverpool.ac.uk. This is called sending a command to the list server. Replace "Your Name" with your actual name. The list server software will determine your e-mail address from the return address of your message. Make sure you put the commands in the text portion of the message not the subject, since the subject of your message will be ignored. If you have an automatic signature appended to the end of your e-mail messages you must include the "END" command.

Once you have subscribed to the list you will be distributed a copy of every message sent to the list.

How to Post Messages to the List

To send a message to all the people currently subscribed to the list, just send mail to Materials-l@liverpool.ac.uk. This is called sending mail to the list, because you send mail to a single address and the listproc software distributes copies to all the people who have subscribed to the list. This address is also called the list address. You must never try to send any command to the list address, because it would be sent to the entire list.

Commercial entities should contact the list owner concerning list policies regarding commercial postings.

When replying to messages posted to the list you should consider wether your reply is of general interest or not. If your reply is of general interest you should send your message to the list. If your reply is not of general interest or of a personal nature you should send your message to the person who originally posted the message. This will prevent the newsgroup from being clogged with messages that say things like, "Jerry, Thanks for the information!".

Depending on the configuration of the list server software and of your mailer the address automatically entered as the reply-to field of your reply may either be the list address or the address of the person who originally posted the message. You should always check this first before you send your message.

In either case you should copy the original subject, preceded by the characters "Re: ", to the new subject field if your mailer does not do this for you.

    GET Materials-l filename
    END

    command.
